The Sun Also Rises
Tuesday, April 9th, 2013The Sun Also Rises features two sets of songs: Five obscure tracks of African origin, recorded between the early ’80s and this past year, alongside five reinterpretations by artists drawn from the Scandinavian dance-music world. The album was initiated by Quartz+Co to create a musical reflection of its activities in Africa, where the company, which is based in Norway, Sweden, and Denmark, has worked extensively to aid local entrepreneurship. To create the album, Quartz+Co called upon the services of This Is Care Of, a multimedia arts collective centered around the musicians Rasmus Bille Bahncke and Mikkel Hess and the designer Jacob Wildschioedtz—all Danish natives living in New York City. Unearthing the songs proved no small task. As Hess notes, “It was especially important to find songs that were, basically, the most bad-ass things we had heard in a long time.” – J.
